Curriculum Intent
At Fareham Academy, our Hospitality and Catering curriculum is designed to be ambitious, inclusive, and knowledge-rich, providing students with a thorough understanding of the hospitality sector and its real-world applications. The WJEC Level 1/2 Vocational Award offers an applied learning experience where students acquire essential knowledge, skills, and understanding that are highly relevant to the growing hospitality and catering industry. This qualification promotes personal development, equipping students with the confidence and practical skills to succeed in this dynamic sector.
The curriculum is coherently planned and sequenced, ensuring that students progressively develop key competencies such as food safety, menu planning, customer service, and the importance of nutrition in food preparation. By working on real-world tasks, students will learn to apply theoretical knowledge in practical, hands-on contexts. The balance of 60% theory and 40% practical ensures that learners receive a broad and balanced understanding of the industry. We integrate SMSC education throughout, encouraging students to respect diversity, engage in meaningful community involvement, and contribute to society with a sense of responsibility.
Literacy development is central to this course. Through initiatives like Voice21 and Oracy, students will develop their ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. By using technical language specific to the hospitality and catering industry, students will be able to articulate ideas confidently, whether in team-based tasks or formal assessments. This literacy-rich approach fosters students’ ability to access more complex topics while supporting their wider educational development.
The course also embraces the Greener Curriculum, emphasising the importance of sustainability within the hospitality sector. Students will learn about environmentally responsible practices and how to plan and prepare meals in a way that is both sustainable and nutritious, reinforcing their role in building a more eco-conscious society.
Our curriculum is designed to adapt and support all learners, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), through differentiated approaches and tailored tasks. This ensures that every student can succeed, developing their skills and knowledge in a way that meets their individual needs.
This qualification is a broad and balanced introduction to the hospitality and catering industry. It fosters key skills in teamwork, communication, and problem solving, while also offering an understanding of the business operations that drive the sector. By studying areas such as food safety, customer service, and nutrition, students are equipped with the skills needed to thrive in both education and future career opportunities.
Through this qualification, we aim to develop confident, articulate and responsible students who are prepared to contribute positively to the hospitality industry and society. Our curriculum equips students with the practical skills, literacy, and sustainability awareness needed to thrive in a competitive and rapidly evolving field.
