Year 6 Transition
Fareham Academy Transition Programme
We are delighted that you have chosen Fareham Academy for your child. It is an extremely exciting but also a potentially nerve wracking time, and we are aware you may have many questions and this page aims to answer as many of these as you can.
The aim of Fareham Academy’s transition package is to ensure that the transition from a primary school to secondary is as smooth as possible. Starting secondary school is an exciting yet daunting change. Our aim is always to protect the children’s well-being in this time and to ensure that their learning is maintained. Transition can be complicated by the social, emotional, and physiological changes that children experience, and which can negatively impact on their learning. By working closely with the local primary schools, we can minimise the children’s anxiety and help to make their move to Key Stage 3 an exciting and happy one.

Transition Visit
The Transition Team at Fareham Academy works closely with local feeder and primary schools to ensure a smooth and effective move into secondary education. This collaboration helps guarantee that important information is not overlooked and that every student is fully supported from the moment they join Fareham Academy.

Transition Week
Transition Week is the start of students' journey towards unlocking their potential at Fareham Academy.
The week has proven to be an amazing opportunity for students to settle into Fareham Academy and become well acquainted with our core values of 'Resilience', 'Aspiration' and 'Kindness', before starting in September. Feedback from previous years has been phenomenally positive, as transition week also helps students make new friends, familiarise routines and feel fully integrated and a part of our community.
Our Transition Week is action packed and your child will experience lessons and activities in most of the subjects taught at the Academy. They will meet new teachers and follow a full school timetable. Your child’s tutor will be on hand to support them every step of the way. We also have an amazing group of Year 9 Student Leaders who will support students in each lesson and answer any questions if needed.

Head of Year and Tutor Groups
Throughout transition week you will get a chance meet a number of key staff including your Head of Year, tutor (although these may be subject to change due to new staff joining in September).
Furthermore, every student will be allocated a tutor group. They will spend transition week getting to know their group and the idea is this will most likely be their tutor groups when they join in September. The tutor group will be a collection of students from different schools and is a chance for them to bond, forge new friendships and build resilience.
If you require any further information related to your children's transition, please contact Miss L Emery (Head of Year).

Fareham & Gosport Schools Collaboration Information
KS2-3 Transition arrangements for children with an EHCP: The district of Fareham and Gosport has 9 secondary schools, all with an inclusive ethos and commitment to meeting the needs of young people with an EHCP. A crucial stage of these young people’s school journey is phase transfer from KS2-3. Where managed successfully, this can have a powerfully positive impact on their chances of success at secondary school, and consequently into adult life. An individual school’s capacity to meet the needs of its children with additional needs is another important factor in enabling these young people to be successful. Consequently, it is desirable that there is a level of equity and certainty about the number and identity of children joining each secondary school each year. Therefore, Fareham and Gosport secondary schools agree and endorse an approach which encourages as many families as possible to choose their catchment school as the secondary school for their child with an EHCP. Sometimes, a school will have certain features which make it an obviously appropriate choice – for example if it has a Resourced Provision suited to an individual child’s specific needs. However, in almost all instances, it will be the case that the child’s catchment secondary school will be able to meet their individual needs. All schools tend to share similar characteristics, resource and provision in this respect. In this case, it is likely that a child being placed in their local secondary catchment school will have several benefits to them, for example: The logistical/geographical advantages of living near to their secondary school and the likely positive knock-on effects of easy travel to school and on attendance and punctuality. The opportunity to meet and form friendships and social relationships with other young people who live nearby and with whom they can spend time with outside of school. Easier access to before and after-school support and extra-curricular clubs and activities, important for wider engagement in school and the development of other interests, skills, confidence and cultural and social capital. Please contact h.clarke@fareham-academy.co.uk if your child has an EHCP and you are considering joining our school in September.
