SEND Provision

Fareham Academy is becoming an over-subscribed successful, 11-16 mixed comprehensive school, with a reputation for high quality education for students with SEND. The school is situated in Fareham, a short distance from Fareham train station for travel and therefore within easy reach of the city centres of both Portsmouth and Southampton. The school enjoys enthusiastic staff, governor and parental involvement and has an active commitment to staff development.

Fareham Academy is a mainstream secondary school with a resource provision for students who are Hearing Impaired; this provision is called The Link Centre. The Link Centre is a resource provision for Hearing Impaired students who are able to access mainstream lessons with some support from a Communication Support Worker. Admission to The LINK centre is solely through Hampshire County Council.

Our vision is to meet the academic, social, emotional and mental health needs of all children who have special educational needs.  We embrace the fact that every child is different and, therefore, the educational needs of every child are different. In our school, students will be provided with high quality teaching adapted to suit the diverse needs of all learners. We are an inclusive school and offer a range of provisions to support children with additional needs to help them achieve our aims.

Hearing Impaired Resource Unit (The Link Centre)

Fareham Academy has a resourced unit that specialises in supporting students with hearing loss. Our ethos at Fareham Academy is one of inclusion and we are totally committed to ensuring that all of our students with hearing loss reach their full academic potential. We feel this can only fully be achieved through integration into mainstream classes. We aim to integrate students on arrival into mainstream classes with the addition of the resource unit to support pre and post teaching.

 

Fareham Academy are dedicated in supporting a range of communication approaches and have qualified staff to support this in various settings. The LINK Centre can be found upstairs in E block. It is a sound-proofed area for deaf students with both hearing aids and cochlear implants. Please feel free to make an appointment with any of our LINK Centre team to visit our unit or to ask any further questions..

Speech and Language Support

We have worked with Springboard Speech and Language since 2015.  They are a small Hampshire based Speech and Language Therapy company, and Chris and Rachel our current therapists are both experienced at working with students of Secondary age.

 

Springboard provide detailed assessments of students who have significant Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) in order to help our staff to understand their needs and how to support them.  These may be students with a specific speech and language need such as stammering or a language disorder, or students where their needs are part of a broader profile, e.g. hearing impairment, autism, or a learning difficulty. In specific cases a period of direct therapy may also be provided alongside the advice and support to staff.

 

Additionally, Springboard have a broader role across the school for example providing staff training, and they have developed a vocabulary screen for use with our Year 7 pupils to assess their knowledge of academic vocabulary (words like evaluate, summarise and perspective). Alongside this they also created a series of video tutorials relating to this vocabulary that are used within lessons in school.
