Curriculum Intent
At Fareham Academy, our Child Development curriculum is designed to be ambitious and inclusive, offering all students a comprehensive, knowledge-rich understanding of child development from birth to five years old. The curriculum equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, enabling them to support children's learning and well-being effectively. Through a blend of vocational contexts and academic rigor, students gain insights into key concepts such as play-based learning, the role of early years professionals, and the factors influencing child development.
The curriculum is coherently planned and sequenced, building on prior knowledge to ensure a progressive development of understanding. Topics such as individual needs, the importance of play, and creating child-friendly environments are carefully sequenced to allow students to master essential concepts and skills. This enables students to engage deeply with the material, promoting both intellectual growth and practical application.
We place a strong emphasis on inclusion, designing and adapting the curriculum to meet the needs of all students, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Through SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural) education, students are encouraged to develop empathy, resilience, and problem-solving skills, supporting their personal growth and helping them to contribute meaningfully to society. By fostering a respect for diverse perspectives and encouraging responsible citizenship, we prepare students to approach their futures with a broad cultural awareness and commitment to British values.
Literacy and communication skills are at the heart of our curriculum. Through Voice21 and Oracy initiatives, students are encouraged to express their ideas confidently, strengthening their ability to articulate complex concepts. This focus on spoken and written communication supports students in developing the skills necessary for both academic success and future career pathways.
In addition, the curriculum promotes a Greener Curriculum, highlighting sustainability in early years settings and the wider environmental impact of childcare practices. Students learn to apply sustainable and responsible practices within their studies, fostering a sense of environmental stewardship.
Our curriculum is broad and balanced, offering opportunities for progression into post-16 education in areas such as A Levels, vocational qualifications or apprenticeships. Students who complete the course will be well-equipped to pursue careers in early years education, health and social care or related fields, while also developing as thoughtful, responsible and reflective individuals.
At the core of our Child Development curriculum is the goal to nurture students as confident, empathetic and socially responsible learners. By providing a structured, inclusive and knowledge-rich learning experience, we ensure that students are not only well-prepared for further study but also ready to make a positive impact on the world of early childhood education.
