Curriculum Intent
At Fareham Academy, our Engineering Design curriculum is designed to be ambitious and inclusive, providing students with a comprehensive, knowledge-rich understanding of the engineering design process. This qualification offers students the opportunity to explore how engineered products are conceived, developed, and brought to market, equipping them with essential skills for the engineering sector and beyond. Students will engage with both technical theory and practical application, building confidence in problem solving, creativity, and technical communication.
The curriculum is coherently planned and sequenced, enabling students to progressively develop their skills in design and technology. Topics such as market research, design specifications, sustainability, and computer-aided design (CAD) are carefully sequenced to ensure mastery of engineering concepts. Students will apply these principles to create and evaluate their own design solutions, fostering a deep understanding of the engineering design process and its real-world applications.
Our curriculum is committed to inclusion, supporting students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) through adaptations and differentiation. By embedding SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural) education throughout, we encourage students to develop empathy, resilience, and a sense of responsibility, preparing them to contribute thoughtfully to society. Through the exploration of sustainable design practices within the Greener Curriculum, students will develop an understanding of the environmental impact of their work and how to approach design challenges with responsibility towards the planet.
Literacy and communication are fundamental to success in Engineering Design. Through initiatives such as Voice21 and Oracy, students will develop the ability to articulate their ideas clearly and confidently, both verbally and in writing. The curriculum emphasises the importance of technical language, ensuring that students are well-prepared to communicate complex design ideas effectively.
The course is broad and balanced, offering students the opportunity to develop a well-rounded skill set in technical drawing, model-making and CAD software. The qualification is designed to be practical and hands-on, providing students with opportunities to engage in real-world design challenges. This complements other subjects such as Design and Technology and provides a solid foundation for students pursuing further education or careers in engineering, product design, or related fields.
Through this qualification, we aim to develop confident, creative and socially responsible learners who are prepared to make a positive impact on the world of engineering. By offering a structured, inclusive and knowledge-rich learning experience, we ensure that students are equipped to approach the challenges of the future with confidence and insight.
